About 4 Wheel & Off-Road

Originally created as a special interest publication by the editors of Hot Rod, Petersen's 4-Wheel & Off-Road has grown into the largest 4x4 enthusiast brand in the world. Celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2013, Petersen's 4-Wheel & Off-Road has become the biggest title in the 4x4 world by leaving the chrome behind and focusing on hardcore 4-wheeling. From informative and comprehensive technical stories, to coverage of trails and events around the globe, to sharing the latest creations from our readers, 4-Wheel & Off-Road is a wealth of knowledge each and every month.

In addition to 4x4 of the Year and Ultimate Adventure -- the brand's signature annual events–the eminently knowledgeable and passionate editors of 4-Wheel & Off-Road also extensively cover other major gatherings of the 4x4 faithful, feature amazing vehicle builds, serve up technical how-to advice, and wrench on project vehicles. Technical editor Fred Williams is also the star of Dirt Every Day, a fun and informative 4x4-themed series featured on the Motor Trend YouTube channel.

Ultimate Adventure dates back to 2000 and is one of the most aptly named events around, and is at the top of every self-respecting wheelers bucket list. Each year Editor-in-Chief Rick Péwé hand picks a small group of lucky readers and takes them on the trip of a lifetime along with the staff and a group of sponsors. A new destination is chosen each year and kept as a closely guarded secret, but regardless of where they are on the map the week-long off-road journey covers over 1,000 miles of mud, rock, sand, trees, and asphalt while camping through several states. The motto for UA is “No Whining”, and everyone has to be entirely self-sufficient and no trailers are allowed.

First awarded in 1983, the 4x4 of the Year trophy goes to the best new 4x4-capable truck or SUV, with requirements including a two-speed, low-range-equipped transfer case, and with more than 2,500 vehicles produced each year and that we can crawl under the vehicle while the tires are still on the ground to weed out the cute UTEs. Qualifying vehicles are then judged against six criteria – ride & drive impressions, empirical data, mechanical figures, 4-wheeling attributes, interior quality, and exterior quality, with a heavy emphasis on the 4-wheeling attributes.

In short, 4-Wheel & Off-Road offers up a wealth of knowledge, experience and entertainment designed to engage the most passionate 4x4 enthusiasts, those new to the trails, and everyone in-between.
