Beneath the hull of an ancient '42 M-37 lies the heart of a torque-beast: the Cummins 24-valve diesel.

Found in Ohio in 1998, Bill Caruth's '42 Dodge M-37 Power Wagon made an incredible conversion from a beat-up cornfield workhorse to this spectacular Texas 4x4. Besides shortening the truck's length by 19 1/2 inches, builder Phil Compton fabricated and powdercoated the Dodge's hood, fenders, bumpers and interior parts.

Compton's interior sports standard and Auto Meter LED gauges. A built-in CB makes for easy communications. Ironically, the radio in this WWII truck is a German-built Becker AM/FM short-wave radio. Both doors have Kevlar epoxied into them for noise reduction.

The powdercoated double-thick running boards can be removed by unscrewing two bolts and being slid off their rails. They can then be unfolded to produce a couple of 12-foot ramps that can carry the entire weight of the vehicle.

As with the original M-37, Caruth's rig uses two Interstate batteries in a nifty compartment, originally used for two 12-volts that were used to power-up the radios during WWII.

Compton fabricated a special compartment for tools in the Dodge's front bumper. Inside is a pair of steel 4-foot, 1 3/4-inch spikes with eyelets. Also, a 38-pound sledgehammer, a quick jack, a tire iron, a chain, and a bag of tools. Both ends of the bumper have lock downs that fold on hinges. Foam keeps the tools from rattling.
