About Chevrolet Blazer

Intro

The Chevrolet Blazer is largely known for its size. The K5 Blazer offers full-size SUV power in a slightly smaller vehicle, as well as being fun to drive with some solid off road capabilities. The S-10 Blazer was a pioneer among compact SUVs, and is notable for its ability to provide the benefits of a sport utility vehicle at a fairly reasonable price.

Origins

The Chevrolet Blazer is actually two vehicles, the Chevrolet K5 Blazer and the Chevrolet S10 Blazer. Both models were popular Chevrolet SUV models, although of different sizes and appealing to different areas of the SUV market.

The Chevrolet K5 Blazer first appeared in 1969 and was more of a truck than an SUV, as the concept of the SUV is a more recent innovation. However, this shortened truck definitely paved the way for SUVs of the future and ultimately became the smallest of GMs full-size SUVs.

The SUV more commonly known as the Chevrolet Blazer is probably the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. The S-10 Blazer first appeared in 1983, while the K5 had been in production for some time, and offered a more compact SUV alternative to the K5.

Evolution

The original model of the K5 Blazer was a two-door model that came in rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, although in its inaugural year only four-wheel drive was available. The idea of the K5 Blazer as a shortened pickup truck with more passenger space was an impetus for the SUVs of today. The idea of a vehicle with the off-road capabilities one would expect from a traditional off-road vehicle combined with luxury features making it suitable as a passenger transport came with great appeal for many consumers.

The most enduring and memorable version of the Chevrolet K5 Blazer was probably the second generation model. This model added tilt steering and was entirely all-wheel drive from 1982 on. The Blazer came available with a three-speed automatic, four-speed automatic, or four-speed manual transmission and several engine choices, including the 5.7-liter V-8, 6.6-liter V-8, and 6.2-liter, Detroit Diesel V-8. It was known for its off-roading characteristics.

The first Chevrolet S-10 Blazer came out in 1983 soon after the emergence of the S-10 pickup truck. The S-10 Blazer looked for the most part like a smaller version of the K5 Blazer, although without the removable hardtop of the larger K5. Like the K5, early models were two-door vehicles, although four-door versions were added alter. This vehicle was built on the GMT330 platform, and originally came with a fairly weak 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine. In 1988, the Chevrolet Blazer saw a more powerful 4.3-liter V-6 under the hood.

The final incarnation of the Chevrolet K5 Blazer represented its transition to the Chevrolet Tahoe of today. 1992 was also the year the Blazer saw its counterpart the GMC Jimmy disappear from the full-size SUV market, to be replaced by the GMC Yukon. The last generation of K5 was built on the then new GMT400 platform, with a longer wheelbase, a stronger frame, and new exterior features. This Chevrolet Blazer featured the 5.7-liter V-8 or 6.5-liter, Detroit Diesel V-8 linked to a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission.

The second generation of the S-10 Chevrolet Blazer was to be the last, although it continued production in Brazil until 2012. It was in 1995 that the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer truly became "The" Chevrolet Blazer, as the K-5 had been discontinued the year before, leaving the S-10 with an undisputed claim to the Blazer name. This Blazer, which was slightly larger than earlier models, such that it could be officially classified as a midsize SUV, came as a two-door or four-door SUV, and also featured the GMT330 platform and 4.3-liter, V-6 engine found in the first generation models, linked to a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission. Fuel economy challenges and competition from other GM SUV models such as the GMC Envoy (a successor to the GMC Jimmy) and the Chevrolet TrailBlazer (an offshoot/trim level of the Blazer that became its own model in 2002), caused Chevrolet to stop production of the traditional Blazer in the United States in 2005.
