Gettin' crazy at the Summer Jambo

Moab, Rubicon, Tellico, Bloomsburg. Bloomsburg?!? Yeah, we know it sounds weird to include a 4-Wheel Jamboree with the likes of some of the best 'wheeling destinations in the nation. Fact is, though, despite the fact that this event is vastly different than your average trail ride, it is still a must-see facet of 'wheeling. Even though it isn't the biggest Jamboree in the lineup, we consider the trek to Bloomsburg a mandatory pilgrimage each July because it's so much fun.

  • We're not sure whether Carl Clinton is an astrophysicist or just fearless. He launched his Bronco II to stellar heights, survived reentry into the atmosphere, and then drove his SUV away.

  • Remember the Suzuki X90? You know, the spacious two-passenger model that they only imported for three years? Have you been wondering where they've gone? Now you know. Andy Jordan drove his into the ground (literally) at Bloomsburg.

The Summer 4-Wheel Jamboree Nationals celebrated its 18th year in 2005, and it did so in its usual frenetic manner. More than 52,000 spectators and 3,400 participants invaded the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds for three days of everything four-wheel drive. The aftermarket also responded to the call in a big way, resulting in a collection of almost 100 vendors in the Performance Marketplace.

If you want to witness this midsummer madness, plan on attending the 19th Annual Summer 4-Wheel Jamboree Nationals, which will return to Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, July 7-9, 2006. For more info, contact Special Events at 317/236-6525 or www.familyevents.com. As a bonus, the event is close to Paragon Adventure Park and Rausch Creek Off-Road Park, so you can do some 'wheeling afterward.

  • We're wondering what was going through the mind of Eric English as the rear end of his Jeep kicked up like an industrial-grade jack in the box after he fell short on a jump. The brutal landing broke enough components to knock him out of racing the rest of the weekend.

  • Fullsize trucks aren't supposed to fly this high, are they? Actually, it's OK because it's Eric Overpeck, and he's been racing fullsize rigs in Tough Truck for years. He knows how to build 'em to last too. An example is the massive trussing on the front axle.

  • Survivor All-Stars winner Rupert Boneham made an appearance at the Bloomsburg Jambo. Now he can say he actually survived the Summer Jambo too. He also survived a meeting with the Four Wheeler staff, which is probably more challenging than America's Tribal Council.

  • We're pretty sure this wasn't how Eric Foor anticipated his run ending. His Scout planted the front end after nose-diving off a jump and the rear end carried over, resulting in an upside-down view of the Pennsylvania scenery. Undeterred, he was back to racing the next day.
