Moab 4x4 Trails - Moab Mania

It's Contagious, And There's Only One Antidote

Photography by Ken Brubaker

In our dusty, rock-infested, low-range world one word can speak volumes. Like the word "Moab." Utter it to a wheeler, and there's a good chance that you'll see their eyes glaze over as their mind involuntarily lurches into a slickrock-infested mental slideshow.

When most think of Moab, most think of the Easter Jeep Safari hosted by the Red Rock 4-Wheelers. Born from humble roots as a Moab Chamber of Commerce event back in 1967, it has grown to a massive nine-day-long event that draws 'wheelers from all over North America. Wheelers swoop in to the Moab area and fill campgrounds, recreation areas, motels, hotels, condos, and rental homes. They fill their days by exploring trails like Steel Bender, Hell's Revenge, and Pritchett Canyon, and they fill their nights by wrenching on their rigs or hanging out at the Moab Diner and the Moab Brewery.

Like tens of thousands of you, we loaded our rigs and pointed them to Moab for a week of adventure. Naturally, an event of this caliber deserves some major coverage, so we've dedicated nine pages to the Moab mania. In addition to this story, each member of the Four Wheeler staff has weighed in with a favorite Moab trail. What you'll find is a radically diverse collection of trails and we'll provide you with gobs of details and why we think these trails rock. As a bonus, you'll also read about the other, less known side of Moab-the snowy side.

  • Some folks just wouldn't miss Moab for anything. Chris Werderitch from Crested Butte, Colorado, got a new 5.3L V-8 engine installed in his '80 CJ-7. Unfortunately, the computer security lock wouldn't allow it to run. Running out of time, Werderitch went to a junkyard and bought this Grand Cherokee to 'wheel...

  • Moab draws all kinds of folks. This smiling Frenchman looked at us like we were crazy, but we weren't the ones who planned to hang from a parachute with a fan strapped to our back.

  • They call it 'Tater Salad Hill, and even after all these years it continues to be one of the hot spots in Moab. If you go there in the morning or afternoon, there's a good chance you'll find the place almost deserted save for a few rigs toying around on the rocks. Go there in the afternoon or evening, however, and it's a party atmosphere with thousands of spectators waiting (and hoping) for something stupid to happen. During one of our visits, this mildly modified Toyota Land Cruiser walked almost effortlessly up the rocks.

  • One of the cool things about Moab is that you'll often see the manufacturers out on the trails in their rigs. Occasionally these rigs are the same ones used either in advertisements or as competition vehicles. We saw the Nitto/Donahoe FJ Cruiser in action on the trail at Area BFE Off-Road Park. It was driven by the very same Dylan Evans of Team Donahoe who drove the Class 3 machine to a First Place class finish at the SCORE Baja 250.

  • Jeep was out in force in Moab. In addition to a major display on Main Street and a new vehicle unveiling ('08 Jeep Liberty), they also brought a bunch of cool vehicles to Moab. Many were SkunkWerks projects designed to gauge consumer reaction. We had a chance to see this cool orange JK in action on the Fins 'n Things trail.

  • The Red Rock 4-Wheelers sponsor a free Vendor Show at the Spanish Trail Arena outside of Moab. We're always amazed at the steady growth of the Vendor Show from year to year. This year the show boasted a very impressive collection of vendors and their wares as well as even a few new products.
