Showing Off: The 2011 SEMA Show

A Collection Of Rigs From The Largest Specialty-Equipment Show On The Planet

By Ken Brubaker

The Specialty Equipment Market Association, better known as SEMA, throws a gargantuan show every year in Las Vegas, Nevada. It’s known as the SEMA Show (imagine that!) and it’s the largest annual specialty-equipment show on the planet. The four-day 2011 show, held this past November, drew over 100,000 people from over 100 countries. The show featured 12 themed sections including Mobile Electronics; Tools and Equipment; Wheels and Accessories; and Trucks, SUVs, Off-Road. It also contained the New Products Showcase with over 1,500 newly introduced parts, tools, and components (you can read more about the new products elsewhere in this issue). But that ain’t all. In addition, the show hosted seminars, demos, celebrity appearances, and special events.

Holding down the carpet at the Ford booth was this awesome ICON Ford Bronco. It’s modeled after the ’66-’77 bobtail, but it sports a drool-worthy collection of modern components like a 412hp 390 lb-ft 5.0L Coyote V-8 engine mated to an Aisin Warner five-speed manual transmission and Atlas transfer case. It also sports a custom coilover suspension with Eibach coils and Fox Racing shocks. More than just a pretty matte face, the Bronco also has Dynatrac axles, ARB Air Lockers, and Stop Tech disc brakes.

Let’s back up. If you’re not familiar with the SEMA organization, you need to know that it is involved in a number of aftermarket areas, and it works hard to protect consumers’ rights to drive accessorized, customized, and vintage vehicles. The SEMA Show is born of that mission, and it is an industry-only trade show where manufacturers exhibit their latest offerings to international and domestic buyers (60,000 of ’em at the 2011 show), distributors, and the press. The sheer size of the SEMA Show is truly mind boggling and its packed with a fascinating collection of four-wheel-drive vehicles that feature modifications to suit every taste.

For those of you who weren’t able to attend SEMA ’11 we submit a collection of some of the most noteworthy rigs at the show. These are some of the trucks that drew crowds and got people talking.

  • Is this the ultimate fire-fighting brush truck? Hunkered down at the Ford booth was this Power Stroke-powered ’11 Ford Super Duty F-350 “Matchbox Brush Truck” built by Superlift Suspension.

It’s called “The Ultimate Motocross Truck,” and it has some cool features that’ll appeal to those of us who enjoy two-wheeling the dirt. It has a roof rack/viewing deck, fold-up bedsides, suicide tailgate, auxiliary gas pump, pressure washer, air compressor, bed-mounted winch, and hidden ramp storage.

  • There were a staggering number of modified Wranglers at the SEMA Show. As a matter of fact, there were so many that the Wrangler was voted the “Hottest 4x4-SUV” at the show for the second year in a row. Interestingly, many of these Wranglers were sporting coilover conversions like this Wrangler Unlimited built by the team at Rebel Offroad. The company calls it the Trail Recovery Vehicle (TRV) and it has Rebel’s bolt-on Recon coilover conversion. The suspension includes a TeraFlex long-arm kit, 12-inch-travel Fox 2.0 coilover shocks, and Fox 2.0 bumpstops. Other mods to the TRV include Currie RockJock III Dana 60 axles, ARB Air Lockers, 40-inch-diameter Nitto Mud Grappler tires, a slew of Poison Spyder products, PSC hydraulic-assist steering, and Rebel Restraint brakes.

This sharp ’11 Chevy Silverado has a Pure Performance 6-inch Pre-Runner Long-Travel Suspension, 35-inch-diameter General Grabber tires, 4.56:1 gears, N-Fab front bumper, a pair of 30-inch Rigid Industries LED light bars, and Fiberwerks front fenders and bedsides.

  • Falken Tire had another example of a well-built Wrangler with coilovers. This clean ’07 actually began life as a two-wheel-drive model. It was modified by Off Road Evolution and features ORE’s Double ThrowDown suspension with long-arm upgrade kit; an Atlas four-speed T-case; a pair of Dynatrac ProRock 60s with ARB Air Lockers; PSC hydraulic ram-assist steering; a collection of body armor; and ORE’s EVO Hi-Steer kit and 1/4 Pounder front bumper.

  • One of the more unusual JKs at the show was this machine at the Wild Boar Products booth. The company calls it the “Long Ranger 6x6,” and it started life as a ’12 Wrangler Unlimited Sahara. It sports a slew of Wild Boar products including bumpers, roof rack, fiberglass hardtop, fiberglass fenders, and bed cover. The suspension consists of a TeraFlex suspension with air bags. The rig rolls on 35-inch-diameter Toyo Open Country MTs. Wild Boar says the rig has a 65-gallon fuel capacity, which gives the rig a 1,000-plus mile driving range.

  • AEV trotted out its newest creation: the Brute Double Cab. It was arguably the most popular JK of the show. This is a real honest-to-goodness pickup and it utilizes a chassis 23 inches longer than the Wrangler Unlimited for a total wheelbase of 139 inches and an overall length of 216 inches. Yep, you’ll eventually be able to purchase one of these from AEV and production is expected to begin in mid-2012. We’ll have a full feature on the Brute Double Cab in a future issue of Four Wheeler.
