15-17 New York - 10th annual Adirondack Fall Jeep Jamboree at Martinsburg. This upstate jamboree will be on logging trails established long ago in the shadow of 5,344-foot Mt. Marcy. You will also pass markers commemorating Revolutionary War battle sites. Fort Stanwix, a military outpost of the period, still stands in nearby Rome. This area, famous for its maple syrup and 18th century landowners George Washington and Alexander Hamilton, explodes with color in the fall, especially along the deep forest trails. 15-17 Colorado - 13th Ouray Jeep Jamboree. Better known to some as the Switzerland of America, Ouray is located 7,800 feet above sea level. This jamboree winds its way on mule trails blazed by 19th century prospectors. You'll travel harrowing hairpins and switchbacks as you ascend to more than 13,000 feet. You'll have a great view of waterfalls, ghost towns, and abandoned mines. At the trail's end, George Wheeldon, a professor of geology, and Brian Hayes, a professor of Native American studies, will give educational talks about the surrounding area. Tow hooks mandatory. 16-17 California - 9th annual Trip to the Diggin's - a leisurely two-day 4WD trip through the heart of the Mother Lode, beginning in Nevada City and cresting in the High Sierra near Sierra City. This trip takes you through some of the best-preserved early day mining towns, mines, and museums, including some towns that have virtually disappeared since the days of the gold rush. All quality meals and camp-out facilities are provided through Sunday, noon. Local motels are available. This trip is classed as gentle four-wheeling - no rough stuff. Suitable for sport utility vehicles. All proceeds go to the California Association of 4 Wheel Drive Clubs Conservation and Education Foundation to support programs of driver safety, education, and resource protection. 9/22-24 - South Dakota - 10th annual Black Hills Jeep Jamboree at Deadwood. Black Hills National Forest is home to Mount Rushmore and some of South Dakota's most scenic and historic locales. It encompasses the legendary town of Deadwood, which is best known for the exploits of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. Today, Deadwood is maintained as both a colorful vestige of the Old West and as a first-rate family resort area that includes modern campgrounds and gaming casinos. 9/22-24 - Wisconsin - 6th Northwoods Jeep Jamboree at Crandon. You'll squeeze through heavily forested trails, passing by creeks, ponds, and lakes that dot the 661,000 acre Nicolet National Forest. Cross abandoned rail beds used decades ago by logging companies, and skirt the swamps that are the headwaters for the Peshigo, Wolf, and Wisconsin rivers. 9/22-24 - New York - 2nd annual Catskill Mountain Fall Jeep Jamboree at Sullivan County. Nestled between the Delaware and Hudson river valleys, the Catskill Mountain range is magnificent in autumn. A lush wilderness just 90 miles north of New York City, the Catskills are dotted with hundreds of lakes and endless miles of streams. Excellent trout fishing is common here. 9/30-October 1 - California - CORVA's annual Southern Jamboree at Quail Canyon in Hungry Valley SVRA in Gorman. All vehicles are welcome (except 3 wheelers because of insurance). On Saturday, there will be many vehicle games for both adults and kids, and that night there will be a prepared dinner (for a nominal fee), an awards ceremony, and a drawing for many great off-road prizes. On Sunday, there will be a poker run taking drivers and riders through the Hungry Valley SVRA. Bring the family. All proceeds go to the California Off-Road Vehicle Association's Land Use Fund. Located on the bend of the Cumberland River, Williamsburg is known for its charming homes, picturesque landscapes, vast outdoor recreational activities, and the second largest waterfall east of the Rockies. Numerous trails of varying difficulty will lure you into the woods. You'll experience steep forested ridges, magnificent natural arches, and lush vegetation. 10/21 - California - 4 Wheel Drive Safety Training course and classroom study at Hungry Valley SVRA; held near Gorman off Highway 5, between Bakersfield and Los Angeles. You'll have classroom study to gain or increase your knowledge of four-wheeling practices, driving responsibly, and learn more about your ability and your vehicle's ability. Following the classroom study, you'll get a chance to put that knowledge to work on the various segments of the course - rock climbing, hillclimbing, and so on. Harry Baker is the Chief Instructor. 10/28-29 - California - Truckhaven Cruise with Ecological 4 Wheeling with Don Carter as the trip leader. The challenging Truckhaven Hills in San Diego County are a maze of trails that run from the mild to wild. Saturday night, you'll camp in the desert, have a potluck dinner, and relive the day's adventures via video on a portable TV. Both Saturday and Sunday afternoons will be hands-on, skill-learning days, taking time to demonstrate the proper usage of different equipment. You'll cruise up and down huge hills and cruise the washes while visiting the 17 Palms Oasis, the Calcite Mine, Locomotive rock, Palm Wash, and Indian tenajas.
