Every respectable hotel had a switchboard - if there's telephone service in the area. At Bodie, there were many of the amenities found in cities of the era, made possible by the wealth of the mines. The first use of hydroelectric power grew out of Bodie's need for electricity. Green Creek near Bridgeport provided 3,500 volts of electricity (130 hp) via strung wires in 1892. The technology was in quick demand worldwide.
