Looking down between canyon walls to Saline Valley below, there's a mine structure visible at the lower left. Saline Valley is almost 100 miles long, and water sources are scarce to non-existent. Can you imagine backpacking the length and breadth of Saline Valley without outside sources of water? The author's opinion is that wilderness advocates do not aspire to such a backpacking trip. Instead, their goal is to keep people from visiting places like this. Furthermore, yours truly has backpacking, hiking, and mountain biking experience, and enjoys each activity. In his opinion, four-wheel drive vehicles do not belong everywhere but closed-to-the-public wilderness doesn't, either.
