In this photo, we've just turned right/north from New York Mountain road onto Caruthers Canyon road. The intersection is unsigned, but it's well-worn and prominent. The big Joshua tree on the right is near the northeast corner of the intersection. The trail crosses a couple of side routes. It's tough to get lost if you remember to keep heading up-canyon. The route gets narrow in a few spots. If you can't stand scratches in your paint you'll end up parking early. We kept going and paid the price in scratches. In our dual-duty, daily-driver 4Runner we've decided that scratches are OK, but dents are to be avoided.
