Drilling Stands

This drill stand was anchored to the floor and ceiling of the assay office. Pneumatic drills made miners more productive, but they brought a couple of problems with them. They were heavy, so holders such as this one bore the weight while the miners operated levers to advance the drill bit against the ore. The second problem was a health hazard: drilling dust clogged up lungs, often with fatal results. Adding a water nozzle at the drill’s snout solved the dust problem and saved lives.
