One of the best parts of camping is that it’s a cheap way to go once you’ve purchased the basic gear. You might even find some developed campgrounds that can be used at no charge. Afton Canyon Campground in the Mojave National Preserve is administered by the BLM, and Arroyo Salado Campground is part of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Both of these campgrounds are free to use on a first-come, first-served basis. Bring your own water, and pack out all your trash.
