We just spent the weekend up at Pismo Beach, California for one of the gnarliest truck jump competitions in the country. Huckfest originally began as a group of friends who would show up at the Oceano Sand Dunes to jump their trucks for distance and glory. Although no prize money was ever in contention, bragging rights sure made all the competitors slam the skinny to the wood up a steep sand dune in search of some major air.
Fast forward to 2013, Huckfest is now a sanctioned event thanks to the tireless efforts of Johnny and Manual Garner who have pulled off another successful Dogfight in the Dunes for the second year in a row. This year the gauntlet was thrown down by Monster Energy’s Trophy Truck Racer, BJ Baldwin. Mike Higgins of B & L Sand Toys accepted the challenge and drove out all the way from Michigan to silence BJ Baldwin and his 850 Horsepower Trophy Truck with his much lighter Pro 2 Sand Toy race truck.
These two weren’t the only ones turning heads in the dunes over the weekend. As luck would have it, every little kid’s dream of seeing a monster truck jumping high in the air became a reality as Pat Gerber lit off the fire breathing 8-71 supercharged 523 c.i. Chevy big block V8 in his 11,500-pound Shocker Monster Truck. Pat had the crowd cheering like schoolchildren on the last day of class as the 1450-Horsepower Monster Truck ripped around the dunes catching tons of air underneath its massive 66x43-25 Firestone tires. Watching the loud monster truck roar off the lip of the dunes at speed and soak up the landings like it was floating on a cloud put a big smile on all our faces. We could seriously watch it rip around the dunes all day.
Huckfest 2013 had the gnarliest high-flying off-road action you will ever see and we’re looking forward to bringing you all the wild action from next year’s Pismo Beach Huckfest.
