Ultimate Adventure: Can You Make It?That's the question: Can you be a part of the Ultimate Adventure team and wheel with us across the country? Last month in Drivelines we gave you some preliminary info on this year's Ultimate Adventure and how you, the reader, could go along. So now we'll divulge the whole story and all the rules, since by the time you receive this issue you'll only have a month or so to send in an application and photo.
If you're new to 4-Wheel & Off-Road, check out our Oct. '01 issue for last year's Ultimate Adventure coverage. A grueling week of road trips alternating with tough 4x4 trails is what it's all about, all in the name of fun. We take along some of the staff of the mag, a few friends, and some of our sponsors, and now we give you the opportunity to join us. But as usual, we have a host of rules and regs that need to be abided by, and your rig has to be in top-notch shape as well.
This year's Ultimate Adventure starts June 22 in Farmington, New Mexico, and heads to Montrose, Colorado. From there the trip heads to Moab, Utah, and finishes up in Cedar City, Utah. You are responsible for yourself and all costs associated with the Ultimate Adventure, as well as getting to and from the event.
Rules for 4-Wheel & Off-Road's Ultimate Adventure 2002:
*We are not responsible for you during this event.
*We will use the buddy system so you are partnered with another vehicle throughout this adventure. If you do not find a buddy before the first trail day, we will help you find one.
*We will try to stick together and help everyone, but with a group of this size, it will not always be practical to delay the entire group for one or two people.
*Only one vehicle allowed per invitee.
*Vehicles must be driven (not towed) on the entire Ultimate Adventure.
*Vehicles may be towed to a repair location-the intent of the no-trailer rule is to enforce the pavement portion of the adventure.
*The group will leave as close as possible to posted times-don't be late or you may be left behind.
*Bring overnight gear (sleeping bag, food, water, and so on) for unplanned late nights on the trail or side of road.
*Participants are responsible for all of their own expenses (food, lodging, fuel, repairs, fees, and so on).
*Alcohol consumption will not be tolerated on trails or any time you are driving.
*Passengers may not drink on trails.
*Illegal drug use will not be tolerated any time during the tour.
There will be a tech inspection Saturday at check in. This requires that you check in during the hours posted. Your vehicle will be inspected for all of the following equipment. You will not be allowed to join Ultimate Adventure if your vehicle fails this inspection.
*Vehicle must be street licensed and insured
*Front and rear lockers (limited slips do not suffice)
*Must be self-sufficient (bring your own spares, tools, jack, and trail food)
*Rollbar (rollcage preferred)
*Seatbelts for all occupants
*Adequate tow-strap/winch attachment points front and rear
*35-inch minimum tire size
Send us a photo of your 4x4 with all of the important info that would help us select you, and don't forget the contact information. Our deadline for receiving applications is May 18. So get your camera clicking and fingers working. We'll carefully scrutinize each application, and decide who will get to go with us no later than the beginning of June. Send your information to Ultimate Adventure, 4-Wheel & Off-Road, 6420 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90048.
