Dakota Territory 4x4 Challege - Rapid City 4x4 Wheelin'

Often when we visit a new place for a trail ride or an event we get a rental car and spend our downtime in a smelly hotel watching free cable. But this trip we had our pals at Twisted Customs pick us up from the giant Rapid City Airport (we're joking) and we went straight to the shop at 9:45 p.m. Even professionals like these guys need to burn a little midnight oil at times to finish up projects for their customers. We found them wrenching on a new four-seat tube buggy that was to be delivered the following day. We grabbed a cold Dr. Pepper and hung out snapping photos till about 4 a.m. It was way better than being at the office or Motel 6.

If you live in a big metropolitan city like we do then you surely recognize the value of getting away from it all every once in a while. Heck, no matter where you live it's nice to get away from the daily grind and go explore a new place, preferably a place where you can go wheeling. As luck would have it we took a flight out of smog-encrusted Southern California and stretched a long Labor Day weekend into a five-day trip to Rapid City, South Dakota. Though it may not seem like a resort destination for most, it truly is; especially if your idea of relaxation is rolling hills, miles of coniferous trees, and world-class rockcrawling over truck-sized boulders.

Our plan was to attend the Dakota Territory Challenge put on by Black Hills 4-Wheelers because we hadn't covered this event in a few years. Plus from attending the many rockcrawling competitions we had met the crew from Twisted Customs, a rock buggy fabrication and 4x4 shop. Since they're located in Rapid City, we lined them up to haul us around while in town and show us what Rapid has to offer.

Rapid City easily makes the list of great wheeling destinations with nice people, wicked rocks, and awesome scenery. Plus the cost of living is so low compared to our current residence we considered staying. So the next time your boss is ragging on you, the local traffic is unbearable, or you just need to get away, load up your trail machine and head north to the biggest little city in the south...South Dakota, that is.

The Dakota Challenge will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2007, and we're already bugging our boss for the time off and you should too. Get all the info at www.bh4wheelers.com, or call 605.721.6265 in the evenings for a registration packet.
