Panamint City was the hub of the area during the mining and silver boom in the late 1800s. The long-abandoned city was reachable by Surprise Canyon, an extreme four-wheel-drive trail that required some hardcore winching to get through. Today, thanks to the overzealous actions of the Center for Biological Diversity, the only way to reach the city is an arduous 7-mile uphill hike.
