Every March for the past 49 years the Tierra Del Sol Four Wheel Drive Club of Sand Diego, California, has put on the Desert Safari, an off-road event near Truckhaven, California. This event offers a long weekend of wheeling, exploring, and generally enjoying the desert from the seat of your favorite 4x4. We like the Desert Safari because the terrain is so unique, with miles and miles of rolling dirt hills, climbs, notches, gullies, and washes. You can putter along in your stock CJ or Wrangler, twist up your tube buggy, or squeeze through in your fullsize. No matter what, you’ll find something to play on.
Next year will definitely be the biggest, as it’s the 50th anniversary. So get cracking on that project you’ve been whittling away on in the garage, and pack some clothes for everything from sweltering sun to dusty desert wind because you never know what it will be like in March. For even more info check out the club’s website, www.tds4x4.com.
Representin’ Pays Off
Daniel Alvarez had his ups and downs at the Desert Safari. He was looking forward to a weekend with his family off-roading in his Jeep, but found his world upside-down in a slight roll that did some damage he wasn’t looking forward to. His luck changed when we spotted his Jeep running 4WOR colors at the end of the weekend and awarded him a gift certificate for a set of General Tires (www.generaltire.com) just for running our sticker. If you like 4-Wheel & Off-Road, run a sticker, wear a hat, or just wave a copy of the magazine at us. You never know—we may give you a prize.
