I had noticed that one jeep had been popping out the exhaust more and more as our trip progressed, and knew the valves needed to be adjusted. We had to wait anyway for the military to sign off on documents to travel into the Great Sand Sea, so a quick adjustment and carb rebuild got the jeep running better. Our group mechanic, Tarek Abd el Fatah, also retarded the timing and doused the intake with oil, an old Egyptian tune-up trick.
