Why Beating Cheap Junk Is Fun
When I was a kid I really wanted a 4x4. I saved up my money from working all summer long and found a rusty, dilapidated CJ-5 that I could afford. I drug it home, wrenched on it, and got it running. When other kids spent their money on whatever other kids were spending their money on, I was repairing my Jeep. I read a manual about all the various components, rolled around under it in the dirt trying to figure out how it worked, and can still remember the night I finally got it started. At midnight, while my parents and brother were asleep in the house, I was revving that 304 with side pipes as loud as I could and whoopin’ and hollerin’ with delight.
Cheap Truck Challenge is based on that same premise. You, the reader who is still in high school and is dying to do more than just read about four-wheeling every month, this is for you. This year’s goal is simple: Buy a 4x4 for under $2,013 and fix it up for less than another $2,013. Finally after spending and wrenching as little as possible, go see what it will do. How does it perform? Will it climb hills, go rockcrawling, haul all your camping gear, mud bog, and jump? Will it make it to school every day and to that job mowing, bagging, flipping, or sweeping that you do every weekend in order to pay for said 4x4?
We the staff of 4WOR spent our dollars on a few financially diminutive 4x4s to show you that four-wheeling can be fun on a budget. Then we headed out to the Arizona desert for a ridiculously fun weekend of low-buck wheeling to prove that point.
A special shout-out to two companies that realize low-buck fun and beginner wheelers are important to business. This year CTC has sponsors! Daystar, propagators of fine polyurethane products as well as suspension components, signed up as presenting sponsor for 2013. Poly Performance, the online sales hub of just about any 4x4 part or widget imaginable (both low- and high-dollar), threw in its hat as supporting sponsor. Thanks!
