Cerro Gordo (Spanish for “fat hill”) was the site of a major silver boom in the late 1800s. At more than 8,000 feet, winters can be extremely harsh. Cerro Gordo is privately owned, so respect the signs you see upon arrival. This photo shows the American Hotel, one of several Cerro Gordo building still intact.
