All Things Dirt at Crandon International Raceway
A good bud of mine, Dave Ante, has always been gung ho about furthering, growing, and promoting the off-road and especially mudding communities any way he can. He has been successful and either helped create or had a hand in several big events in the Great Lakes and the neighboring southern and western states. He has done well enough to bring in the big names like Mud Life, the 4x4cross crew and me, and Trucks Gone Wild to his events. So when he told me he had landed a huge event at the renowned Crandon International Raceway, I was down. —Ricky B Wilson
Crandon International Raceway is located in Crandon, Wisconsin, in the North Easter Corner of the state. The track is roughly a two-hour drive from Green Bay. Crandon is a 1½-mile dirt short-course off-road racing track (think Baja/Trophy style trucks) that plays host to the world championship Traxxas TORC Series off-road races that’s presented by Amsoil. Crandon’s big sanctioned event is typically held on Labor Day weekend. Crandon also hosts a huge Brush Run event each June.
Following in the footsteps of the wildly successful off-road racing that Crandon already hosts, Dave Ante created the Super Truck Challenge. It’s an event aimed at duplicating almost every kind of off-roading competition a truck can handle. The Super Truck Challenge had rock racing for the trail and rockcrawling buggies, flat-track dirt drag racing for the Pro Drag Rails, mud bogging for anything from a stock a truck to a mega truck, bounty hole competition for the mega trucks, the Yukon Gear & Axle National Throttle King Series, the Tuff Truck Racing, and more! The event also had a muddin’ area for anyone in any kind of rig or truck to play in all weekend long.
The best part was the overall atmosphere and the long list of things to do around the weekend’s events. Mole Lake Casino & Lodge, the keynote sponsor, put on a killer fireworks show that weekend as well as hosted the big winners banquet. There was also live music each night—it was definitely a good time. Overall, the Super Truck Challenge is a great event with potential for even bigger growth given the location at Crandon and the hard work and effort behind the scenes.
