We attended the massive gathering of desert dwellers at the great Tierra Del Sol Desert Safari this past weekend and it was an event to remember. This was the 54th event and though there were a few changes of locations over the years the event is still based near the Salton Sea outside of Borrego Springs, California. This is one of the largest off road events in southern California and open to all types of off road vehicles from Jeeps and trucks to side by sides and everything in between. The desert inhabitants come in campers and tents with every manner of overlanding type set up so they can camp out for the weekend and play. This year the weather was great, at least until Sunday morning when the winds showed up and sent everyone home with dust in their eyes and sand in their seats. We love the forgiving terrain of TDS, with awesome loose dirt crevasses and fun washes, but there are some steep narrow climbs so you can’t be ignorant of where you are headed. Plus with the mixture of large and small vehicles you need to keep an eye out for your smaller off road brethren if you’re in a bigger 4x4.
The local authorities are out to help everyone have a fun and safe weekend and the TDS club has a big raffle and fireworks to entertain the families and attendees. Be sure and put the TDS Desert Safari on your to-do wheelin’ list for 2017, it’s usually the first weekend in March.
