Hundreds recognize Bob “Weatherman” Steinberger on sight, but thousands know his voice--desert racers, their pit crews, off-road journalists and 4WD enthusiasts. Steinberger is an ambassador of the sport and the radio voice that has delivered news-both good and bad, sent directions to the lost, hope to the stranded, and saved lives.
After more than four decades of service, it’s no surprise that he was selected to be the Grand Marshall of the 2016 NORRA Mexican 1000. “He has put his whole heart into off-roading,” said Mike Pearlman, President of the National Off Road Racing Association. “Everyone knows him and thinks highly of him, so we wanted to honor him for his role in our industry as an ambassador of the sport.”
You might think the Off Road Motorsports Hall of Famer, who was twice honored as SCORE’s Person of the Year, would have taken it in stride. He didn’t. “It had great meaning and is one of the nicest things that ever happened to me,” the 79-year-old said. “It was the crème de la crème-the frosting on the cake!”
