The Baja peninsula of Mexico is a land paused in time with landscape vistas out of coffee table photography books and plants seemingly straight out of Dr. Seuss books. Leave your smart phone and lap top behind, because chances are they won’t work, and you won’t want to be distracted by them. They say don’t drink the water and they may have a point. We say bring cash for street tacos, fresh sea food, churros, coca cola, or beer; you’ll thank us later.
Baja is filled with adventure and since 1967 some adventurers have headed to this land of deserts, beaches, mountains, and dirt to race from one end of the peninsula to the other. This year we got a chance to explore Baja and at a great time of year; time for the NORRA Mexican 1000, a race with a past and a nod towards all the vintage race cars that have faced this harsh land.
Our adventures are many, and you will get a chance to see them in the upcoming weeks and months here at Petersen’s 4-Wheel & Off-Road magazine. For now know we are still in the midst of the adventure and thus can’t tell the tale of our trip yet, but we can give you a peek at the vintage off-road rigs we’ve had the pleasure to get to see in action so far. From an old Triumph sports car to a VW van, vintage Broncos, Chevys, and a Jeep; these vintage racers bring a flavor of the past to a well spiced land of tempting treats and adventure.
