Meet the Hellcrate—Mopar’s 707hp Crate Engine #TENSEMA17

Tired of sitting at the scrapyard waiting for a wrecked Dodge Challenger to limp in so you can salvage the Hellcat engine? Lots of us are, and Mopar has heard our calls.

On display at the 2017 SEMA show is a powerplant that can arrive in your driveway inside a wooden box, or crate if you will. The Mopar 6.2L supercharged HEMI engine, affectionately named the “Hellcrate,” is the first crate engine to crank out 707hp, 650 lb-ft or torque, and maintain a factory backing from Mopar.

“Never before has a supercharged, factory-direct 707-horsepower crate engine kit been offered, and we are proud to be the first to deliver a solution enthusiasts have demanded,” said Pietro Gorlier, Head of Parts and Service (Mopar), FCA. “This ultimate powertrain option fits the needs of owners and fans who demand iconic performance.”

Don’t get too antsy about the idea of slapping 707hp under the hood of your Jeep JK just yet, the Hellcrate comes with a catch—it is only intended for pre-1976 vehicles, mainly due to emissions standards. The kit is also optimized for manual transmissions and cable throttles, and even comes with a new gas pedal.

This screaming crate engine will run you $19,530 for just the engine, and another $2,195 gets you the installation kit. All of this however is backed by a three-year warranty—try getting that from the scrapyard.
