Rusty Gold is a $500 CJ-2A that is an absolute showstopper at SEMA 2018. It caught my eye and the eye of many another car nuts as well. In fact, it caught our eye as well as any $250,000 show car. The truth is, I have a love/hate relationship with SEMA. I love seeing cool automotive aftermarket stuff, but when I am not working I’d rather be with my family or out in the dirt playing with 4x4s, or building a 4x4s, or heading out on some backroads adventure in a 4x4. (In this job maybe that’s all working, too, come to think of it.) But SEMA has lots of interesting stuff for anyone who loves autos. It’s a great place to see old friends, make industry connections, and get good ideas. It’s also lodged firmly in the center of Las Vegas, a city with many attractions, most of which are unfortunately lost on me. Shiny show cars and polished trucks? Meh. I’d rather see something well built that works. Gambling? I’d rather buy another old pile of 4x4 parts and turn it into a project. Drinking? I’d rather do that at camp, in the shop, or at home with friends. Shows? I’d rather hit a self-service junkyard to feed my addiction. Fancy food? Well, I do love food, but I also fancy myself a pretty good cook.
So, although I’d rather be outdoors with friends and family, I also truly want to check out what’s at SEMA. If only it weren’t held in Las Vegas with the crowds, the traffic, and so on. Am I right? No, it’s just my opinion, and I may be different from the norm, but that may give me an edge when looking for new and different stuff in the sea of stuff that is SEMA.
Here are photos of what caught my eye on Thursday at SEMA 2018. Some of this stuff I wanted to look at a bit more carefully, such as one clean CJ-8. Don’t notice anything interesting or different? Look a bit closer.
