In response to customer criticism that the back seat of its Quad Cab Ram pickups was a little snug, Dodge stunned the full-size truck community by unveiling the limousine-like 2006 Ram Mega Cab at the 2005 Chicago Auto Show. The new cab is so spacious, it allows for reclining rear seats, 145.2 cubic feet of total interior space, and 7.6 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the rear seat. With the rear seats folded down, the truck offers 71 cubic feet of interior cargo volume. The only downside to this size is a Titanic-like 52.5-foot turning circle, and a staggering 7,617 pound curb weight on the top 3500 Cummins 4x4 model.
The Mega Cab option will be with a short-bed only, riding on the same 160.5-inch wheelbase as the Quad Cab long-bed. However, it will be offered on 1500, 2500 and 3500 models in SLT and Laramie trim levels. Available engines will be the 5.7L Hemi V-8 on all models, and the 5.9L Cummins turbodiesel on 2500 and 3500 models. The Cummins will be available in the Mega Cab with the choice of a six-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. All Mega Cab models will be built at the Saltillo, Mexico assembly plant.
The 2006 model Ram also adopts a version the new Dakota's somewhat controversial front end, and some Dakota-like interior touches. In a concession to the trend of trucks being used as family vehicles, the Mega Cab offers an optional full-screen navigation radio, rear-seat DVD entertainment system, power-sliding rear window, heated front bucket seats, power sunroof and adjustable pedals.
