2009 Top Truck Challenge Competitor: Christopher Smith's 2003 Ford F350 Super Duty

Triple X-Rated

Unadorned OE white sheetmetal conceals the full tube chassis, also built by Lavender & Associates, with rock sliders fabbed from 2-inch DOM tubing and additional metalwork by Longhair Customs. A set of PIAA driving lights and a Warn 15000 with Viking 3/8-inch synth-line accent the front end, and those 20-inch aluminum Trailreadys should help keep the Boggers on their beads.

On the surface, it doesn't seem like a fair fight. Chris Smith hails from San Martin, California, just a few miles up the road from Hollister Hills, and by his own admission has wheeled the park's numerous obstacles on many occasions. In addition, his TTC Super Duty was built by none other than Toby Lavender, the architect behind our Top Truck-inspired Mega Titan and our head judge at TTC. We also know, however, that "home-field advantage" at Top Truck has been an illusion up until now.

  • Lavenderized! The Triple X Traction three-link front suspension employs Night Stalker remote-reservoir nitro shocks to locate the Rockwell 2 1/2-ton axle spinning Ouverson shafts and 6.72:1 gears. Note the bellypan aft of the axle, which helps to protect the driveline and suspension links.

  • The Ford's interior is about as creature-comfy as anything you'll ever see at TTC, with custom Lariat seats, and Alpine stereo, and a Foose/Arc Audio amp and speakers in the cab. The factory flooring has been ripped out in favor of Line-X, however, which could come in handy in one of the Trap's many mudholes.

  • The Super Duty's 6.0L Power Stroke diesel's internals are still basically stock, though the block has been juiced with the addition of an HUEI injection system and Hypermax injectors for improved high-rpm performance, a Hypermax intercooler for lower EGTs, and a Hypermax six-position tuner. The turbodiesel's estimated 1,000 lb-ft of torque are then sent to a BD Diesel-prepped 5R110 TorqShift transmission.

  • A super-sano rear-steer installation highlights the Super-Duty's rearend, with a dual hydro Howe system on call to turn the 54x20-inch Boggers. As with the front, a Rockwell 2 1/2-ton is held in place by a four-link and Knight Stalker shocks. A Warn 15000 with synthetic line aids with rearward extractions, and that rear attachment point is one heck of a drop hitch!
