A 2001 Regular Cab Super Duty That Is Anything But Regular

Show Stopper

By Ken Brubaker

One of the most talked about trucks at the 2011 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas was this custom regular cab shortbed ’01 Ford Super Duty F-350. It was planted at the BDS Suspension booth and only having Taylor Swift sign autographs would’ve probably generated more buzz.

All total there is approximately 8½ inches of front suspension lift. Six of those come from BDS leaf springs and the remaining 2½ inches come from a shackle lift. Other modifications include a pair of Fox Racing Shox at each wheel, a pair of BDS 5500 Series steering stabilizers, a track bar relocation bracket, and a new pitman arm. The front axle is the factory Dana 50 and its internals remain stock. As you can see, the Tangelo Orange and black color scheme continues underneath the Super Duty and the parts were either powdercoated by Promax Powdercoating in Big Bend, Wisconsin, or painted.

The truck was designed and built by Rok Industry, which is a two year-old hobby-turned-business that specializes in designing, building, and completing project vehicles. The company is owned by Ernie Vole of Vernon Hills, Illinois, and he has years of experience building eye-catching rigs. The trucks design was inspired by Vole’s truck-loving six year-old nephew Charlie, Vole’s imagination, and a little help from a friend. All told it took seven months to create the truck that Vole calls “Stubby.”

Here’s a closer look at the driver-side pair of 2.0 Series Fox Racing Shox. These custom-valved nitrogen shocks are available through BDS Suspension and have a 6061 T6 aluminum shock body and induction-hardened 5/8-inch-diameter chrome shafts. Each pair under the front of the rig is mounted using BDS’ Front Dual Shock Mounting Kit.

It began as an illustration created by Rok Industry artist Dave Tucker. Once BDS gave the project a green light, it was game on for the next seven months. “To create the standard cab shortbed Ford F-350 that is not offered from Ford, we had some head scratching on how to make this work. We did lots of measuring to make sure that when cutting the frame we would measure twice and cut once,” Vole says. Building the truck wasn’t as complex as say, building a custom tube-frame rock buggy from the ground up, but cutting a truck in half, removing a chunk of frame, and then putting it back together requires precision. Measurements, cuts, and welds must be exact. Then there’s the assortment of mods that go along with it. The rear driveshaft, fuel lines, brake lines, wiring, and exhaust must be modified to compensate for the shorter length. On top of that, creating a truck of SEMA caliber required that every detail and modification had to be analyzed, scrutinized, and then painstakingly brought to reality, which took vast amounts of time.

Creating a show stopping truck that would stand out among all the other amazing trucks at the Las Vegas SEMA Show wasn’t easy, but Vole did it. You may not be seeing this bright orange, mega-clean rig on the Rubicon, but you will definitely be seeing it.

  • There’s something sexy about a regular cab shortbed truck. But add body mods like those found on this truck and it becomes downright seductive. To create this truck, the regular cab longbed donor vehicle was almost completely disassembled. Sixteen inches of the chassis was removed to compensate for the shorter salvage yard-sourced six-foot shortbed. After the chassis was re-welded the area was reinforced with 3/16-inch steel plates and then all the unused holes in the frame were filled before it was painted House of Kolor Tangelo Orange to match the exterior of the truck. Speaking of the trucks exterior, it underwent significant modifications, the majority of which are from Hannemann Fiberglass. The list includes 5-inch-bulge front fiberglass quarter-panels, 5-inch-bulge fiberglass bedsides, a fiberglass cowl hood, and a front bumper. Other exterior mods include a custom grille and headlights, Back Country Accessories nerf bars, Recon smoked marker light lenses with LED lights, and a rear bumper from a ’08 S

In stock form, this engine is rated at 250hp and 505 lb-ft of torque, but this engine puts out more horsepower and torque due to a number of upgrades including the Gibson exhaust and an Airaid intake system. Further, the stock turbocharger has been upgraded with Xtreme Diesel’s X-Wheel compressor wheel, which eliminates compressor surge and increases airflow for better all-around performance at higher boost levels.

A pair of BDS ladder bars help keep the rearend planted. The rear axle is the stock Ford 10.5-inch and it’s fed by a shortened rear driveshaft. Two other noteworthy items are visible from this angle. First, there’s the heavily modified Gibson 4-inch-diameter exhaust. Originally designed for a regular cab longbed application, it was shortened and then modified to clear the passenger-side dual Fox shocks before being powdercoated black. Second, just in front of the axle you can see the 20-gallon Summit Racing fuel cell, which replaces the factory fuel tank.
