2005 International CXT: Iron Revenge

18,020 Pounds Of Colossal Four-Wheel-Drive

By Ken Brubaker
The CXT may be big, but Magicmotorsports says, “It can easily cruise (with cruise control) at any posted speed limit to include Texas at 80 mph for nearly 1,000 miles. Two west-to-east coast road trips this last year proved that to be the case and the truck is very nimble and easy to drive.”

In the fall of 2004, International rolled out the gargantuan four-wheel drive CXT. Basically a semi tractor sporting a modified Ford Super Duty dualie pickup bed, it left people slack-jawed in amazement. It had a monster diesel engine, air brakes, a towing capacity of 40,000 pounds, and a hauling capacity of 11,400 pounds. It should’ve come standard with a mop to sop up all the testosterone.

But that wasn’t enough for Orlando, Florida-based Magicmotorsports. The company took the ’05 CXT you see here, originally purchased to tow heavy equipment, and modified it with a variety of goodies including a suspension lift, larger tires, custom bumpers, and a winch, among many other things. We spotted the rig at the 2011 SEMA Show in Las Vegas (kinda hard not to notice it because it towered above most of the other rigs) and were struck by its uniqueness and the fact that it had a fascinating list of custom mods. So in our quest to bring you a wide variety of feature rigs we invited Magicmotorsports to bring the truck to our semi-secret desert photo location so we could shoot some photos and see the truck in action.

There’s more to the story. You see, Magicmotorsports calls this truck “Ironrevenge” and it’s part of the Strength of America Project. Glenn Harris, manager of Magicmotorsports and primary driver of the rig says, “It was at least a driving force for me as I hope to inspire people of all ages to build things in America and to inspire both young and old to build and create in general. Of course four-wheel-drive trucks are a love for me and the greatest part of all of this, but I intend for Ironrevenge, as it travels doing shows and events, to be able to foster a mentorship program with great builders, manufacturers, and fabricators nationwide of all products American and of course anything automotive.” He goes on to say, “The truck is a part of the culture of America and four wheeler trucks are a big part of the American image and strength of our country. I want it to grow and thrive.” To promote this cause, the Ironrevenge CXT is planned to be at a minimum of 30 events in 2012 and you can get more info at www.ironrevenge.com.

  • The front bumper was custom made by Buckstop Truckware using 1/4- and 3⁄16-inch steel. It holds a Warn 16,500-pound winch, provides mounts for a collection of PIAA and Warn lighting, has a top-mounted winch access door, a pair of shackle mounts, a 2-inch hitch receiver, and a custom drop-tube made from 2 1/2-inch-diameter, 1⁄8-inch-wall material to conform to Florida state bumper height laws. The bumper is powdercoated with a Silver Vein finish. Out back is a Mr. Pickup bumper that was modified by Magicmotorsports and it holds a collection of lighting and a Mile Marker 12,000-pound winch.

  • The front axle is a huge 10,000-pound-rated, double cardan joint-equipped, Meritor MX-10-120 and it has a 13.25-inch-diameter ring gear and 5.13:1 ratio gears. To compensate for the suspension lift a new drag link with inverted ends helps to decrease the angle of the link. The pitman arm had its length and angle/rake modified.

  • It’s not like CXT suspension lifts are readily available, so a custom system was designed by Chucks Trucks. To create the lift needed for the larger tires up front, the leaf springs were re-arched, factory-like 1 1/2-inch longer custom shackles were fabricated, four 1/2-inch-thick laser-cut shims (per side) that mimicked the factory shims were added, longer U-bolts were used, and longer shocks from a tractor-trailer supply house were installed. This created enough lift for a set of 53x16.0R20 Michelin XZL tires that replace the 40-inch-diameter stock tires. The new Michelin’s are mounted on custom split-rim wheels that are 10 inches wide.

  • Out back is a huge Meritor RS-17-145 axle that’s rated at 17,000 pounds. It has 2-inch-diameter, 39-spline axleshafts and a ring gear diameter of 15 inches. Like the front axle it sports 5.13:1 ratio gearing. Chucks Trucks lifted the suspension using longer, custom-fabbed, factory-like hangers, six 1/2-inch-thick factory-like custom laser-cut shims (per side), longer U-bolts, and tractor-trailer supply house-sourced longer shocks. This increased suspension height provides room for a set of 54.5x24.0R21 Michelin XZL tires. The tires are mounted on custom split-rim steel wheels that are 18 inches wide.

  • A custom drop-frame with crossmembers was added by Sterling Equipment & Manufacturing Company. Due to the increased height of the vehicle this system was installed for side impact safety and also to help protect the transfer case and driveline during off-road travel. It was made from 3x4-inch structural tubing with a 3⁄16-inch wall thickness. It’s powdercoated and welded to the frame at eight points.

  • The interior of the CXT could be mistaken for that of a luxury SUV. The front seats are air-ride and leather-trimmed, there’s a rearview camera, 10.5-inch drop-down DVD screen for rear seat passengers (who also sit on leather seating surfaces), a custom center console, thick carpeting, Tom Tom GPS unit, and black walnut wood trim. The cab also sports a massive audio system including an Alpine head unit, Pioneer amplifier, Alpine speakers, and a Kicker subwoofer. Even more unique touches include an airbag rear suspension for the cab and pushbutton-type transmission shift control.

  • Under the fiberglass tilting hood is an electronically fuel-injected DT466 High Torque inline-six turbodiesel. At 1,400 rpm the engine makes 300hp and 860 lb-ft of torque. Glenn Harris of Magicmotorsports says, “The Ironrevenge CXT has a very noticeable increase in torque and power with the HP DT466. It is a big difference as my other truck (a CXT) is the 220 horsepower version. A huge difference.” The cooling system includes an engine-driven two-speed fan and 940 square-inch aluminum radiator. It also has a 1,025 square-inch charge air cooler and a 13.2 cfm Bendix Tu-Flo 550 air compressor that provides air for the brakes, interior front seats, cab, and other items. A 4"-diameter aluminized pipe with vertical chrome tailpipe carries the exhaust. The engine is coupled to an Allison 3000 five-speed automatic transmission. Power is split to the axles via a 10,000-pound capacity, PTO-equipped, electric-over-air-control Meritor T-4210 2 two-speed transfer case that weighs approx. 620 Lbs & has a 2.05:1 low ratio

  • All of the exterior metal work and base paint was done by American Classics Auto Paint & Design using Dodge Viper GPS Blue Pearl and Orion Silver Metallic paint. The graphics were airbrushed by Steve “Paintman” Rubino. A 1⁄8-inch-thick aluminum panel was fabricated and installed to the area between the cab and chassis to eliminate the factory gap. The trucks bed-mounted rollbar was designed and fabricated by truckrollbar.com using 3-inch-diameter DOM tubing. All powdercoating on the truck was done by Powder Tech and all metal fab and diamond plate work was done by Glenn Harris with help from local fabricators including L&C Metals and S&L Fabrication.

Mounted on the driver-side are a 70-gallon fuel tank and the battery box that holds a pair of 12-volt 1,300 cold cranking amp batteries.
