Performance Air Filter Systems

Introducing: K&N Generation II Fuel-Injection Performance Kit

Biography: Noticeably increases overall engine performance and throttle response by maximizing airflow through the air filter and the air inlet system. The Generation II setup also smooths the airflow and allows for an increase in the total airflow volume, which promotes engine efficiency. The Generation II is a complete composite replacement for the factory air filter assembly and positions the new, high-flow, washable K&N Filtercharger element in a near-OE location where it can gulp cool, fresh air. K&N's Generation II Fuel-Injection Performance Kit is 50-state legal and is currently offered for the '99-to-2000 Chevy Silverado and the GMC Sierra equipped with either a 4.8L or a 5.3L V-8 engine.

The Performance: Expect an increase of 18 hp and a 16-lb-ft improvement in torque along with basic improvements in the throttle response and the fuel mileage.

Now Appearing: JET Performance Products' Power-Flo Intake

Biography: Boasting an increase in airflow of as much as 25 percent, the Power-Flo air-intake tube creates improved throttle response and fuel efficiency through the use of a low-restriction, washable, and reuseable air filter element and a metal air-intake tube with a smooth, airflow-enhancing interior surface. All installation hardware is included and the Power-Flo Intake is an easy install on the following: '89-to-2000 GM C/K trucks and SUVs with a small-block or big-block engine; '99-to-2000 GM Silverado and Sierra trucks with 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L engines; GM S-10 and S-15 trucks with 4.3L V-6 engines; '97-to-2000 Ford F-150s and F-250s with 4.6L or 5.4L V-8 engines; '96-to-2000 Dodge Rams powered by 5.2L or 5.9L V-8 engines.

High-Tech Fuel Injection and a Trick Carb
Now Appearing: ACCEL SuperRam

Biography: A unique, retrofit Tuned-Port-Injection system for small-block Chevy engines intended to replace the carburetor or the throttle body. When used in its intended application, the SuperRam is 50-state legal, and the John Lingenfelter-designed TPI setup is powerful, tunable, and driveable. The SuperRam boasts a 1,000-cfm billet throttle body, a high-flow plenum, large-diameter intake runners, and a manifold base specifically designed to enhance throttle response and to maximize airflow.

The Performance: On an otherwise stock 305ci small-block Chevy engine, the SuperRam showed an increase of 50 lb-ft of torque at 3,500 rpm.

Biography: Designed by high-performance carburetor experts, the Road Demon carburetor is an all-new carburetor, not a copy of an existing design. Rated at 625 cfm, the vacuum-secondary four-barrel fuel mixer is ideal for small-block V-8 engines. Introducing: Holley Pro-Jection EFI

Biography: Holley's cost-effective but strong-performing Pro-Jection electronic fuel-injection system is actually a series of throttle-body injection units; one-barrel, two-barrel, and four-barrel bodies make up the Pro-Jection lineup. Designed to replace the carburetor on non-computerized engines, the Pro-Jection throttle bodies feature basic bolt-on installation, work well with stock or modified engines, are useable on almost any type of intake manifold, and greatly improve the fuel system's throttle response, the overall efficiency, and the reliability.

The Performance: Horsepower and torque gains are related to the engine's size and state of tune, but the Pro-Jection system will deliver gains of 10 to 30 horsepower on average.

Biography: Designed for '91-and-newer Jeep TJ and YJ models, Turbo City's Rock-It performance throttle body is a factory casting specifically designed for enhanced airflow and improved throttle response. The Hi-Flow Throttle Body fits the Jeep's 2.5L four-cylinder engine as well as its 4.0L inline-six engine. The new throttle body is 50-state legal and is easily installed with basic handtools.

Magical Intake Manifolds

Introducing: Edelbrock Performer

Biography: A true high-performance dual-plane intake manifold for pre-'86 small-block GM engines. The cast-aluminum Performer is designed to accept an OE-style A/C bracket, a choke, a water neck, an alternator bracket, and an HEI ignition. Performer No. 2101 is for engines without EGR; No. 3701 contains EGR passages and a mounting pad for the EGR valve. Either small-block Performer is 50-state legal and uses a carburetor mounting pad that accepts an OE or an aftermarket four-barrel carb. The Performer's dual-plane design is efficient at low- and mid-rpm ranges; throttle response is enhanced through more efficient management of the intake airflow. Performer No. 2101 is available from Edelbrock with a clear powdercoat finish

The Performance: The Performer's power gains are dependent on the type of camshaft, the cylinder heads, and the exhaust system installed on the engine, but a stock GM small-block V-8 will typically see an increase of 20 hp and 25 lb-ft of torque after the installation of an Edelbrock Performer.

Biography: A cast-aluminum performance intake manifold featuring a high-rise dual-plane design, which is focused on low or moderate speed (idle-to-6,500 rpm) torque production. The Stealth's split-plenum design accents throttle response and overall fuel efficiency, and its carburetor mounting pad is drilled to accept either a spread-bore or a square-bore carburetor. The Weiand Stealth is available with a satin or a polished finish for small and large oval-port big-block Chevrolet engines; it weighs 20 pounds.

The Performance: Loads of low-speed torque is the Stealth's claim to fame; the dual-plane design creates a flat, useable torque curve that's especially handy during off-road excursions.

Headers, Headed Your Way

Now Appearing: Hooker Super Competition Header
Biography: Super Competition headers for '87-to-'90 258ci I6 Jeep engines are fabricated from 18-gauge mild steel tubing and feature equal primary tube lengths to enhance exhaust gas velocity and flow. Hooker Super Competition headers use a long collector to smooth and blend together the exiting exhaust flow; a 5/16-inch-thick exhaust mounting flange with integral metal O-rings ensures a leak-free seal at the cylinder head mounting point. It can be factory-coated with Hooker's Metallic Ceramic Thermal Barrier Coating, which provides a terrific, high-luster finish; heat resistance to 1,600 degrees; rust resistance; and a low underhood temperature.

The Performance: The Jeep I6 engines really respond to Hooker's equal-length headers: An impressively wide torque curve and 10 additional ponies are manifest after the headers are in place.

Biography: The Davis Unified Ignition distributor for Chrysler 318-, 340-, and 360ci V-8 engines is a complete ignition system void of external or add-on electronic controls, but loaded with high-performance features. Based on a GM HEI distributor, the DUI unit boasts a performance Dyna Module ignition module with a longer-than-stock dwell time, an ignition curve specific to each particular Mopar V-8 engine, and a 50,000-volt internal coil. Installation is simple because the DUI distributor is powered by a single 12-volt wire. Additionally, the DUI sparker, in Street/Strip trim, is capable of efficient spark production and controls as much as 7,000 rpm, provides enhanced throttle response, and eliminates the oft-problematic OE Chrysler ballast resistor, thus delivering maximum reliability.

The Performance: A 15hp gain is typically realized on stock engines; as much as a 40hp boost can be experienced on modified powerplants.

Introducing: MSD 6AL Ignition Control

Biography: Multiple sparks are at hand with the venerable MSD 6AL system. The red MSD control box is capable of generating multiple sparks during the initial 20 degrees of each cylinder's ignition cycle, therefore boosting any engine's efficiency, throttle response, and performance. The 6AL, which uses an integral wiring harness and is adaptable to four-, six-, or eight-cylinder engines, features a built-in Soft-Touch Rev Control for accurate protection against excessive rpm and is legal in all 50 states.

The Performance: The improvements in idle quality and low-speed power are undeniable, as is the increase in overall fuel efficiency. Most V-8 engines will be improved by at least 15 hp depending on the powerplant's state of tune and degree of modification.

Now Appearing: Kenne Bell Twin Screw Supercharger

Biography: Uniquely designed and constructed, the Kenne Bell Supercharger for Ford's 6.8L V-10 engine, currently found in the Excursion, the F-250, and the F-350, is a twin screw unit, which takes incoming air and accelerates (pressurizes) it using dual, screw-shaped rotors. This design is highly efficient, thus extremely powerful. Maximum boost from the Twin Screw Supercharger is available at 2,000 rpm and higher with virtually no lag. The Kenne Bell Supercharger is internally lubricated through an integral oil system, is offered as a true bolt-on kit for FoMoCo's V-10 powerplant, and is 50-state legal.

The Performance: On an otherwise stock 6.8L V-10 Ford Triton engine, the Kenne Bell Twin Screw Supercharger system increased horsepower from 300 to 408 and boosted torque output from 387 lb-ft to 525 lb-ft.

Biography: Designed explicitly for the General's popular '96-to-'99 Central-Port-Injection 5.7L V-8 powered trucks and SUVs, Paxton's supercharger systems are based around the new NOVI 2000 supercharger. The quiet, highly efficient centrifugal blower uses a geardrive system to spin the impeller, features direct engine oiling for lubrication, a Paxta-Map programmable fuel-management system, two auxiliary fuel injectors, an MSD/Paxton boost/ignition timing controller, a billet aluminum inlet and discharge tubes, and a K&N Filtercharger.

Introducing: Vortech Engineering Dodge Supercharger Kit

Biography: Engineered to greatly enhance the engine performance of the 5.2L and 5.9L V-8 engines used in late-model Dodge Dakota and Ram trucks. The Vortech S-Trim centrifugal supercharger features SQ (Super Quiet) internal drive gears and pumps out 9 pounds of boost. The Vortech Dodge kit includes all mounting accessories, a cast alloy TBI cover, air inlet and discharge tubes, supplementary fuel injectors, fuel rails, braided fuel lines, a fuel controller to safely supply the necessary additional fuel, and a Crane ignition system with a plug-in harness.

The Performance: On a stock Dodge 5.2L V-8, the Vortech blower boosts horsepower to 309 and torque to 365 lb-ft. On an unmodified 5.9L V-8, horsepower is increased to 345, and torque is pumped up to 405 lb-ft.

Biography: Each Performer Power Package is made up of a pair of alloy Performer cylinder heads, a Performer-Plus camshaft and lifter set, a Performer dual-plane intake manifold, and, in some cases, a Performer carburetor. The components are designed to function as a complete system, enhancing torque and horsepower at low- and mid-rpm ranges. The Performer Power Packages are available for many small-block V-8 Chrysler, Ford, and GM engines, are 50-state legal in most instances, and can be further matched with specific valvetrain accessories, water pumps, timing chains, camshaft geardrive systems, and valve covers.

The Performance: Improved throttle response, increased fuel efficiency, and, on some engines, gains of as much as 100 hp can be realized.

Biography: Holley's performance-matched components for big-block Chevy engines are truly impressive in application and overall power enhancement. The SysteMAX for carbureted engines replaces the old fuel mixer with a Holley multiport fuel-injection system, a pair of fully assembled aluminum cylinder heads, a Lunati hydraulic roller camshaft, premium pushrods and lifters, a timing chain set, and head bolts. Of special note are the rectangular port cylinder heads' valve sizes: 2.25-inch intake; 1.88-inch exhaust.

The Performance: A Chevy Rat engine equipped with the Holley SysteMAX was dyno-tested to the tune of 550 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque at 4,700 rpm

Heads Will Flow
Introducing: Airflow Research Small-Block Ford Heads

Biography: Designed from the start to be 50-state-emissions legal, yet deliver maximum power, AFR's aluminum cylinder heads for 351ci small-block Ford engines feature 185 cc intake runners, 2.02-inch intake valves, 1.60-inch exhaust valves, and a combustion chamber size of either 58 or 64 ccs. AFR took special measures to ensure that the 185 cc SBF Street Heads won't experience head gasket problems: the heads use a deck that's a full 3/4-inch thick. Other features of AFR's SBF heads include CNC porting on the combustion chambers, the exhaust ports, and the intake ports; a competition three-angle valve job; performance valve springs with chrome-moly retainers; hardened valve seats; and bronze valve guides.

The Performance: When installed on a 351ci small-block Ford with a mild cam and a dual-place intake manifold, 400 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque is common.

Now Appearing: Trick Flow 23-Degree Aluminum Cylinder Heads

Biography: Engineered for small-block Chevy engines, the Trick Flow heads use 195cc intake runners with a small cross-section designed to maximize intake airflow and to produce maximum torque without restricting the heads' airflow capacity at mid and high revs. The Trick Flow heads feature 64cc combustion chambers, 2.02-inch intake valves, 1.60-inch exhaust valves, and hardened valve seats which allow the heads to be used on engines burning unleaded fuel.

The Performance: When Trick Flow tested the 23-Degree Aluminum Cylinder Heads on a 383ci small-block Chevy engine, the dyno recorded an impressive 460 hp and 451 lb-ft of torque.

Biography: JET Performance Products' new Ford Module is a slick bit of computer trickery. The JET Module automatically adjusts and optimizes the Ford OE ignition's spark advance, the air/fuel ratio, and the transmission's shift points. The small overall size of the JET Module and its basic OE-style electrical plug makes for an easy install on all manner of '86-and-newer Blue Oval inline-four, V-6, and V-8 powerplants.

The Performance: The JET microprocessor can add as much as 30 hp to certain V-8 engines. An increase in overall engine output as much as 12 percent is possible on many Ford engines.

Nitrous to Go
Introducing: Nitrous Oxide Systems Ford EFI Kit

Biography: A popular and proven manner to greatly increase a late-model EFI Ford V-8 engine's power, but only when deemed necessary. The big power comes from the additional fuel and oxygen injected by the NOS system, which temporarily boosts engine torque and horsepower to impressive levels. The NOS Stage 1 system injects nitrous oxide (oxygen) into the intake manifold at the throttle valve opening, and the OE fuel injectors are redirected to deliver additional fuel. The NOS system is complete in every detail, is a straightforward bolt on, and enjoys a 50-state legal status.

The Performance: The Stage 1 NOS system will easily deliver 75 hp; more power is available with an upgrade to the NOS Stage 2 kit.
