1999 Chevy K2500 Extended Cab - Southern ComfortPosted in Features on April 1, 2001 Comment (0)
Every month,Off-Road strives to bring you the biggest, baddest, and real-world trucks that are out there, but one look at this wild ride, and suddenly we feel like we're not in Kansas anymore. This creation is 'wheeled by Kevin Barrell, the owner of Southern Off-Road Specialists of Alpharetta, Georgia. The truck was built as a showcase for the company's various capabilities.
At first glance, you cannot help but notice the, shall we say, custom paintjob. Using strictly PPG Industries paint on the truck, a variety of colors ranging from orange to purple to brown to white were mixed and applied by airbrush to the truck's bare metal. Once the checkered flag pattern had dried, black pinstriping was applied by hand to add the finishing touch. At a cost of more than $12,000, we can honestly say that this is one of the most exotic and pricey paint schemes we have ever seen.
Being more than just a paint and body shop, Kevin and his team wanted to showcase their abilities with regard to the vehicle's suspension. A bulletproof 6-inch Pro Comp Suspension lift kit was installed so that the aggressive 35x14.50x16.5-inch Super Swamper SSR tires mounted on 16.5x9.75-inch Weld Racing Typhoon wheels could have plenty of clearance for any endeavor. For creature comfort, the frontend received triple Pro Comp ES 3000 shocks and double ES 3000s on the rearend. The factory 4.10 limited-slip rearend was retained, along with the engine and the transmission. To further assist in the expulsion of gases from the powerplant, a 3-inch after-cat Magnaflow exhaust system was installed.
Completing the truck is a color-matched bedliner and a spare tire carrier that ismounted in the truck's bed. Up front, a chromed brushguard, courtesy of Smittybilt, resides, and a matching custom-made FEY rear drop-hitch bumper is on the back.
It never ceases to amaze us what some people will do to attract the attention of others, but then again, if your company's success depended on getting as much exposure and attention as possible, then you could say that Kevin Barrell is on the road to success.
