1991 Toyota Tundra 4x4 Paradise with a 4 Inch Suspension System - Readers RidesPosted in Features on May 1, 2002
For some, living on a tropical island paradise is just a dream. Kicking it in a beach chair with drink in hand would certainly be the life to lead. Can this dream get any better? Imagine being on that very same beach and rather than sitting in that rickety old beach chair you're strapped in a Recaro racing seat attached to a custom 4x4 with a trick long-travel suspension. This visualization could be considered more than paradise, it could be considered heaven to some hard-core off-road enthusiasts. If you can conjure up the mental image of what it would be like tearing down a pure-white sandy beach in this custom 4x4, dodging palm trees and lava rock formations, then place yourself in a day in the life of Wesley Moore, Kona, Hawaii's super-thrilled off-road enthusiast.
If Wesley isn't getting barreled at his local surf spot, you can find him kicking up the sand and getting air on the beaches and lava gravel beds with his '91 Toyota Tundra 4x4. This paradise-stomper is comprised of all the right components to get it through the toughest situations. To start with, a complete suspension makeover was fabricated and installed by ATS Racing in Wildomar, California. Beginning with the front 4-inch lift suspension system, ATS upper and lower ball joints, Heim steering, A-arms, torsion bars, and custom-valved King coilover triple-stage bypass reservoir shocks with 16 inches of travel were installed. The rear suspension sports trick King coilover reservoir shocks with 18 inches of travel. The custom-valved rear shocks were bolted to relocated lower shock mounts, and the upper mounts were attached to a custom scratch-built bed cage. An ATS three-link suspension setup helps with the rear axle articulation and keeps the axle wrap under control. The front and rear diffs were re-geared to 4:88 for the addition of larger wheels and tires. With the 4-inch lift and gear change, some big rubber was slammed under the fenders; a set of 35x12.5x15R BFG mudders were wrapped over 15x10-inch Champion Outlaw II bead-lock wheels.
The Tundra's 3.0L engine has been enhanced for better aspiration with Downey headers and a Flowmaster exhaust system, allowing this Toyota to cruise through the sand like a 4x4 should. To keep tabs on the powerplant, Auto Meter gauges were installed. The body has been enhanced with a trick Hannemann fiberglass front-end body conversion kit and sprayed with Nissan Xterra Solar Yellow. Custom front and rear prerunner bumpers were installed to guard against any unlikely collisions. The interior of this off-roader was fitted with a 4130 chrome-moly rollbar for safety, Recaro seats for comfort, and Filler Safety seatbelts for driver and passenger security. A 32-gallon JAZ fuel cell was added for those long distance beach excursions when Wesley is checking the surf conditions around the island. To keep him entertained while racing around, a killer 400-watt sound system was installed.
If racing a custom 4x4 on sandy, white beaches with cool tropical trade winds blowing through your windows is your idea of paradise, then build your truck and pack your bags. Wesley Moore did and look at the awesome 'wheeling he's doing in this off-road dreamland he calls home.
