Toyota's Tundra is a functional and stylish truck in OE form, and it's an excellent starting point for those who wish to craft a performance-oriented off-road machine. One enthusiast who created a better Tundra is Anita Goins of Tempe, Arizona. Anita is no stranger to customized trucks; she and her husband Kenyatta operate Goins Automotive Group, one of the Southwest's premier sources for modified, high-end, on- and off-road vehicles.
While Anita could have selected any number of vehicles to use as a basis for a buildup, she was seeking a distinctive vehicle. She ultimately settled on an '00 Toyota Tundra due to its decidedly handsome figure and the fact it lends itself well to modifications.
Although mild by some standards, the Tundra is equipped with premium components throughout. The front suspension employs a 2-1/2-inch lift, and it's fit with Bilstein monotube coilover shocks with Eibach springs. The rear suspension is lifted 2 inches and is controlled by Bilstein monotube dampers - simple, yet effective. The rolling stock includes Jaos aluminum-alloy wheels and BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires.
Anita's truck boasts a fully equipped interior, with such upgrades as a Coustic head unit and EQ, a pair of Xtant amplifiers, an Xtant subwoofer enclosure that replaces the rear seat, and multiple Xtant midrange speakers and tweeters sprinkled throughout the cabin.
Kenyatta turned his considerable body and paint skills loose on the exterior of his wife's Toyota, shaving the exterior body emblems and side moldings, then directing the Goins Automotive Group crew to fabricate prerunner front and rear bumpers and install a spare tire carrier. Once the truck's exterior was in basic shape, Kenyatta removed the doors, the hood, the bed, and almost every other body panel so that the truck's OE green hue could be sanded and covered with primer. Kenyatta then custom-mixed an attractive tangerine-orange paint and proceeded to thoroughly squirt the Tundra. Once assembled, the results proved outstanding.
With her truck complete, Anita was soon enjoying Arizona's desert trails while at the wheel of a clean and contemporary custom. When Jack Cummings of BFGoodrich tires saw the finished truck, he liked it so much that he had the truck photographed for a BFG poster, which is a great ending to a tangerine dream.
