Teen Driver Safety - Road Skillz DVD - Media Review

I think we can all remember being 15 years old sitting in driver's education class in high school, falling asleep while watching yet another instructional video. Nearly every film I recall in class was aimed at teaching you how to pass the driver's written and road test instead of actually teaching you how to drive an automobile. Something else most of those films did was introduce scare tactics to keep kids safer, knowing that at any moment their life could be taken away from them because of a foolish act behind the wheel such as drunk driving.

The Road Skillz DVD has a new approach to teaching kids how to be safe while driving. The filmmakers have put together a team of professional race-car drivers from across the globe and asked them to talk about their driving experiences and safety tips. Racers such as Arie Luyendyk Jr., Ryan Arciero, Sebastian Bourdais, and others explain how alcohol, distractions, and severe weather conditions can impair your driving experience. This DVD takes a step-by-step approach to guiding you through negotiating right and left turns, stop lights, tire blow-outs, blind spots, and road fog. Unlike the videos we remember from class, Road Skillz performs live demonstrations of each driving condition they are educating you about so that you can see first-hand what it is to experience and overcome the challenges you face daily on the streets.

This DVD is aimed specifically at 16- to 25-year-old drivers because of the increasing number of accidents and deaths behind the wheel in that age group. I would encourage any parent with a child getting ready to get their driver's license to pick up a copy of this DVD and watch it with them. This could be the most important 24 minutes you spend with your child. Be safe out there.
