So Good They Have Competition Calling
There isn’t a racer in history who has crossed the finish line without the help of a solid support team. The adage “there is no ‘I’ in team” couldn’t be truer when it comes to the sport of desert racing. Covering more than 1,000 miles of grueling desert at 100 mph is more than any one man, or truck, can do alone. While some of the average-Joe teams cannot afford expensive chase trucks, the big boys rely on not one, but several stationed around the course to help get their driver to the checkered flag before the next guy.
Chase trucks come in all shapes and sizes, depending on your needs. Sometimes you will spot a mid-’80s Toyota pickup loaded with eight spare tires, five-gallon fuel cans, and a few bags of tools. Others carry huge on-board fuel delivery systems that resemble something you would see in a movie or at a military facility that fuels jets. Whatever your needs may be, having a solid support system affects your end result, guaranteed.
McMillin Racing, based in San Diego, California, builds such impressive support rigs that competing teams actually contract McMillin to build chase trucks for them. McMillin Racing currently is using a number of trucks on its own support team. But, two of them, “Chase 3” and “Chase 4,” really caught our eyes as we helped chase Scott, Andy, and Jessica through the San Felipe deserts while prerunning before the 2011 Baja race. OR
