Off-Road Rant - Editorial - August 2011

There really isn’t a right thing to say after something like this. No matter what is said or done now, the fact remains that we lost a great member of the off-road community on April 29, 2011.

While out riding with friends during the Rip to the Tip on the Baja Peninsula, Jeff “Ox” Kargola was killed in a fluke motorcycle accident. No one else was involved, and it was just a terrible, terrible accident.

The Desert Assassins crew was prepared for almost any type of incident, and Ox had the absolute most and best possible care he could have under the circumstances. Everyone involved with the Desert Assassins’ Rip to the Tip trip sprang into action, working like a single machine with just one mission: save Ox. Within a few minutes, they had Kargola on a helicopter and headed for the hospital in San Felipe. Everyone did everything they could.

Rest in peace, Ox. We’ll miss you.. OR

This Month...
We were able to check out three new locking differentials to hit the market (starting on Page 30), plus Jordan May hounded some axle specialists to find out the best features to look for when purchasing aftermarket axleshafts (Page 44).

Besides that, we also found a few minutes to dig out our Almighty Dime S-10 Blazer project (Page 48), and made it down to JD Fabrication in San Diego, California, to check out a new mid-travel Chevy 1500 4x4 suspension system (Page 40).

And if you’re looking to do some racing, but don’t have the giant budget to support your dreams, then check out the new low-buck racing you can do in Arizona (Page 58). Chances are that you already have an almost race-ready vehicle sitting at home right now!

A memorial was held for Jeff “Ox” Kargola on May 5, 2011 in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
