Joe Cunningham of Plant City, Florida, owns this '88 Chevy pickup, which sits proudly on 44x19.5-16.5 Boggers mounted to Bart modular wheels. To clear those massive meats, Joe installed a pair of 8-inch Superlift springs up front. Joe also gained another 3 inches with a straight axle conversion. For the rear, Joe installed a set of 6-inch Pro Comp rear springs with a custom add-a-leaf. The Chevy's powered by a healthy 350 small-block mated to an SM465 transmission. An NP205 transfer case was fitted with a set of custom driveshafts that feature agriculture-grade yokes and U-joints. The truck rides on a Dana 60 front axle and a GM Corporate 14-bolt rear; both have 4.88s and Detroit Lockers.
Misty Mountain Toy
Mike Sandner of Auburn, Washington, built this '85 Toyota pickup as a weekend wheeler. It features a 22RE powerplant, juiced up with a Crane cam, a Crane Hi-6 ignition, an MSD Blaster 2 coil, a set of MSD 8.5 super conductor wires, an LC Engineering cap and rotor, an AC Delco 105-amp alternator, a custom intake, and a cherry bomb muffler. For suspension, Mike added 3-inch shackles, along with a 3-inch body lift, which easily clear a set of 285/75 R16 Durango mud-terrains on cheap black steel wheels. For comfort Mike swapped in a set of '99 Honda Civic SI seats and five-point RCI harnesses.
Matt Hechtkopf of Virginia Beach, Virginia, calls his rig "the Black Beast." It's an '01 Ford crew-cab shortbed F-350 diesel. It has a 6-inch Skyjacker suspension lift to clear 35x12.5 BFG M/Ts on 16.5 Eagle Alloy wheels. Other mods include a custom grille, a Skyjacker adjustable track bar, and dual steering stabilizers. As for future plans, Matt says the truck is definitely going to grow taller. Way to go, Matt!
Between Iraq and a Hard Place
OK, the rig actually belongs to Uncle Sam, but Sergeant Bruce Claussen is a reader, so his photo of his unit's Humvee, mired in the mud somewhere in Iraq (you mean it isn't all desert?) definitely qualifies. Generous 'wheeler that he is, Bruce is happy to give praises to an "SPC Lopez" for getting the H1 stuck in the first place, and to a Corporal Balance for helping him with the recovery. To Bruce and all his mates in the 101st Airborne (Air Assault) Division, thanks for the pic -- here's hoping we see you home soon.
Lloyd Thomas took this shot at Superstition, Montana. He says his '95 XJ has a bone-stock 4.0L in it. The suspension, however, is a Rubicon Express "extreme-duty" 5 1/2-inch kit with 2-inch coil spacers in front and extended shackles on top of the RE springs in the rear. It's got an open Dana 44 rear axle, with a CV driveshaft and slip-yoke eliminator to help prevent vibrations. The front axle is a Dana 30, which remains open as well. Lloyd added Olympic rock sliders and a Skid Row transfer case and lower control-arm skidplates. The Con-Ferr roof rack rounds out Lloyd's list of mods.
Julio Lima of Brasilia, Brazil, spends his weekends wheeling his '98 Jeep TJ on backcountry trails. Brasilia is located right in the middle of the country, so there are a ton of places to play near his home. Julio says, "There aren't many Wranglers here in Brazil prepared for trail use since here it's an import car and is difficult to find accessories and parts, so I always get a lot of looks wherever I go." This picture was taken during a four-day off-backcountry trip to a region called Jalapo in the state of Tocantins. Julio's rig features a custom snorkel, a Rancho Rockcrawler suspension system, 33-inch BFG MTs, a K&N air filter, a Warn 9,000-pound winch, and a set of custom-built bumpers.
This 91 Ford Explorer was sent to us via e-mail by Marshall Graves of Denver Colorado. With a high-pinion Dana 44 full width front axle in place of the weak factory IFS this rig looks to be a great trail performer. Marshall installed Powertrax lockers front and rear, along with 36-inch Iroks. Other mentionable items include a custom rear bumper and rock sliders, and approximately 12-inches of lift.
Working Hard, or Hardly Working?
This '91 Chevy 1500 Sport is owned by Josh Parsons of Lenox, Pennsylvania. Equipped with a 5.7L V-8 sporting a high-flow exhaust system, free-flowing intake, and several other engine mods, clearly Josh uses his truck for work and play. We just hope we don't get him in trouble with his boss for displaying his "work" truck in a work-free environment. We won't tell if you don't.
