The four-wheel steering is readily visible here and you can see how the platform springs work. Platform springs use three half-elliptic leaf springs with one end of the two longitudinal springs mounted to the chassis, or the platform in this case, and the other ends attached to the free end of a transverse spring via double shackles or links. The cast brackets that hang in the center of the chassis support the steering mechanism, chain-drive sprockets, and planetary gears. Coffman says the American steers easily but has horrible bumpsteer. A good jolt will just about tear the wheel out of your hands if you aren’t ready for it.
