Thayer’s Wagonmaster was ordered with the 392ci four-barrel V-8. It cranked out 179hp with a single exhaust and 193hp with the optional duals (a $38 option ala carte), and both ratings were at a very low 3,600 rpm. The torque curve for this engine has to be seen to be believed. The heavy flywheel, small valves, conservative cam, and heavy internal components limited the upper rpm capabilities, but it had a torque curve that stayed within 10 percent of peak from 1,000 to over 3,000 rpm. The 392 was essentially a medium-duty truck engine.
