Watching A Potential Giant-Killer
As magazine guys we always get asked to cover events and go on trips, and it's always a battle to choose which ones to cover and where to go. But last May when we had the chance to go on a Vegas-to-Reno prerun with Kia, we jumped at it. We knew we'd cover the Baja 1000 in the fall, and this was a great opportunity to get some seat time with Kia driver Darren Skilton bouncing around the desert. As journalists, we were issued a new Sorrento from Kia to follow Skilton through the desert trails, but not at full speed. Yeah, right.
We've followed Skilton and Kia from the Paris-Dakar rally a few years ago to numerous Best in the Desert series races, as we like the idea of a lightweight vehicle kicking tail against the giants of the racing world with their big V-8 Trophy Trucks. It's not that we don't appreciate massive amounts of power, but we know that lightweight vehicles can have an advantage, which is something we'll be showing more in the coming months. But for us, it was a good chance to have some fun and churn some dirt while exploring the Nevada desert. Check out our coverage of the Baja 1000 elsewhere in this issue to see how Team Kia Sorento Trick Truck fared.
