Probably the last time Jeep truly broke the mold with a Wagoneer was with the Super Wagoneer, introduced in 1965 as a ’66 model. The company pulled out all the stops to make a luxury 4x4. It had a 270hp, four-barrel version of the AMC 327 V-8 Jeep was using at the time, and it sat in front of a TH400 and a Spicer 21 single-speed T-case. It had extra soundproofing, a center console-mounted shifter, extra plush bucket seats and carpets, power brakes, and power steering on a tilt column. It had a high-end sound system and a powered rear window. Outside was a padded vinyl top with a chrome rack, special woodgrain side trim, special paint options and snazzy wheel covers. It was just what the wealthy doctor ordered! This is a ’69, which was the last year they were built, but a ’67 price sheet shows the retail price was $7,627, about $53,000 in 2013 bucks. And you could buy a Caddy for $7,000 in 1967.
