The 289 two-barrel V-8 transformed the 3,200-pound Bronco Station Wagon from a sure-footed plow horse to a swift cross-country horse. Street 0-60 times improved from around 22 seconds with the inline-six to under 15 seconds with the $180 V-8 option. It was more or less the same 289 low-performance engine found in many Ford cars but with a more off-road friendly carb and the “side-saddle” air filter. The 302 would replace it for 1968.
