Here are 1,275 of rip-snorting cubic centimeters. The available 69 lb-ft of torque were enough for a 1,500-pound rig with its 26:1 crawl ratio. The Ant was the world’s first transverse-engine 4x4. The installation is similar to what you might have seen under the hood of a ’60s Mini or Mini Moke, but the engine is slanted to lower the hood line. fw
