The smog-legal 1GR-FE 4.0L V-6 engine churns out 270 hp, roughly two and a half times as much as the original 22RE mill. The heads on these engines are huge and packaging was a challenge, with the front core support trimmed to move the radiator forward and the inner fenders trimmed to fit shock hoops outside of the exhaust manifolds. The engine swap required a custom aluminum plenum to fit under the hood without a body lift or a hoodscoop. Stoffregen Motorsports worked with Inchworm Gear to turn out the custom manifold on Inchworm’s CNC milling machine and added a cable-operated throttle body from a ’96 Mustang.
