We’ve heard rumors of a YJ with a factory Dana 44 rear axle. That’s nice, and if they do exist in Canada or Brazil that’s great for you…if you live there. We’ve never seen one that was definitely a factory axle. If you can find one, it’s pretty easy to swap a XJ Dana 44 under a YJ. Other popular swaps include the Ford 8.8 out of an Explorer, or Dana 44 out of a TJ, but a 29-spline Chrysler 8.25 is another good option with 5-on-4 1⁄2 bolt pattern. Or if you can dig up a V-6 2WD Tacoma rear axle, that works, too. There are, of course, other options that have different bolt patterns and will require narrowing.
