While some insist that you can’t run hardcore trails without 1-ton axles, I haven’t had many issues with the Dana 44 in the front of my pickup. Why a 44 instead of a Toyota axle? 30-spline Longfields were not available when I started building my truck, and I like the big brakes, hubs, and axletubes of the Dana 44. The downside is that the combination of hydraulic assist, high steer, wheel spacers, and heavy tires kills ball joints on a regular basis. If I had it to do over again I would run the tie rod in the stock location and put the ram behind the tie rod instead of running full high steer.
