Two Guys in an Old Jeep Pickup Searching Out Rusty Arizona Auto TreasuresPosted in Features on May 30, 2015
What gearhead hasn’t dreamed of throwing the schedule out the window, packing enough food and supplies into a vintage vehicle, and hitting the dusty trail in search of old iron treasures? Verne Simons and Christian Hazel piled their cameras and gear into Verne’s 1978 Jeep J10 pickup and headed out of Phoenix, Arizona, with no particular destination in mind. Adventure and misadventure was welcome and the only limit to their journey would be the range of Verne’s “Piggy the Pig Truck’s” fuel tank – which wasn’t that far given the 4.10 gears, T-18 transmission, and enormously thirsty 360 AMC V-8. With both Verne and Christian addicted to old-school vehicles with character (as in rusty, patina’d, worn, and nearly worn out) they spent the next three or so days bumping all over central and northern Arizona with simply one goal in mind: find as many junkyard-type treasures as they could find. Here’s some outtakes from the story that original story, 1978 Jeep J10 Piggy Truck . In the end they found more than they bargained for, especially at the Gold King Mine and Ghost Town in Jerome, Arizona.
