Sometimes when you first see a rig you think, That’s weird but I kind of like it! That’s what we thought the first time we saw Kris Foresee’s 1966 F-100. We remember seeing this simple yet effective—and different—truck for the first time at the Tierra Del Sol Desert Safari several years ago, long before shooting this feature. The bobbed bedsides and trimmed front fenders stand out in our memory, as do the simplicity and functionality. The bed looks like it has parts from an early Bronco grafted to the sides, but those bedsides are just the factory parts chopped down and trimmed to clear older 35-inch BFGs. Up front, just enough of the factory sheetmetal is still there to keep our attention and that retro vibe.
We’re into different because in this line of work it gets pretty boring after looking at the new Jeep built the same way as the last. Kris Foresee, a machinist from Frasier Park, California, has built one unique Ford. The thing works pretty well too, with flexy suspension that helps the vintage sheetmetal up and over the notches and rocks in front of the truck.
This truck is not a polished show rig with tons of shop time, custom fab, and expensive parts to drool over. Not a one-off professional build yielding a truck that is worth more than the sum of its parts. It is simple and effective, built of parts that make sense without adding too many gadgets, frivolous parts, or weight. This yields a truck that is well used, reliable, and well loved. It doesn’t have an expensive light bar or a fancy winch, but it does have towhooks and some good old KC HiLites attached to its retrotastic in-bed rollbar. What the truck also has is an engine that does what it needs to, a dead simple granny-geared transmission, axles that are just right for the tire size, two spares (used, with some life left in them), and good suspension. It has everything the owner needs, and it’s unique.
Sure, we like buggies. Sure, we like custom-built expensive one-off rigs. But we also like things that work and things that are different. We like the fact that year after year we keep seeing this F-100 out at TDS, and we bet it will be there for years to come with Kris and his growing family.
