1967 Baja 1000 Prerun
This is what happens when you push a little too hard while prerunning in Baja. This Jeep broke a front differential miles from civilization. Luckily, a local farmer had a piece of water pipe he could part with. The fix was simply a matter of welding the pipe in place of the pumpkin. This unpublished photo was shot by John Thawley for Hot Rod magazine.

2WD + Water Crossing = Stuck
Once back on the trail, the makeshift 2WD conversion didn’t agree with the driver’s intended route across the streambed. This photo was shot by John Thawley for Hot Rod magazine in 1967 and until now was never published.

CJ-6 Reigns Supreme
John Thawley captured this scene in Baja during the hours before the 1967 race was to start. Not at all uncommon even today, locals in a 2WD car were stuck on one of the many course access roads. This unpublished photo was intended for Hot Rod magazine, but was never actually published.
